Village Life
Is there something about the village that you like, dislike or are curious about? Something that's happened that's amused or saddened you? Do you have an idea that would contribute to or improve life in the village? If so, let's hear about it!
A message from Colin
Today's Bol D'Air supplement in the l'Independant is typical of most
weeks of the year, there is a Fête of something in numerous villages in
the area, but never Maureillas.
Today we have at:
Le Barcarês – Fête de Familles
Millas – Salon Auto
Claira – Fête de L'Artichaut
Prats-de-Mollo – Fête des Terroirs
St-Paul-de-Fenouillet – Foire Gourmande
Llupia – Fête de L'Agneau
Corneilla-la-Riviere – Fête du Thym
Vernet-les-Bains – Fête de la Belle Époque
Arles-sur-Tech – Marché aux fleurs
I know that Maureillas has a three day Fête major, but then most other
villages have a Fête major. Isn't it about time that Maureillas had a
Fête of something?

Re: Village Life
Yes, I agree with you, Colin. A few years ago there was a day in the village called "Montmatre à Maureillas" held in June, I think. Local artists set up their easels, there was a corner for the kids, music etc. It ran for a couple of years and then disappeared off the calendar. Don't know why. People still talk about how much they enjoyed the day. Does anyone have any ideas as to what Maureillas could celebrate that's a little bit different from the other villages

Adopt a Flower Trough:
Ann and Terry have come up with a super idea to brighten up a little corner of the village. Rather than moan about the sad state of the flowers strangled by an abundance of weeds, they've decided to take responsibility to plant and look after two troughs by the roundabout at the bottom of Rue des Escaliers. A real pleasure for visitors and villagers alike on arriving in Maureillas. Thank you both and let's hope your initiative catches on.

Maureillas sans Frontières
Maureillas Las Illas is home to not only a rich Catalan culture but also to those from other parts of France and increasingly from farther afield. Maureillas sans Frontières, a recently established association, has been created to capitalise on and celebrate the rich potential of our different cultures. It aims to enable people to come together for social events, activities and discussion with a view to contributing to a more integrated commune by widening our horizons through understanding and mutual respect.
Maureillas sans Frontières does not believe in a “one-size fits all” approach, rather it plans to tailor its activities, the time, date and place of meeting in accordance with the needs of its members. Not everyone either wants to or can commit to a regular meeting of a large group. A wine tasting circle, an informal linguistic exchange, international or regional cookery workshops and theme evenings, are but a few examples of possible activities. A part time membership for those who would like to participate but who do not live in the village on a full time basis as well as a temporary one for holidaymakers, will be available from September, 2009. This year the subscription will be 10€ per person. To find out more, share your ideas or to join, please contact:

Téléthon 2008
Message from Joséphine:
Friends in the British Community,
A big thank you for all your efforts and solidarity with the Téléthon 2008. This year you were able to nearly double the amount of money raised in comparison to last year. As the slogan says " The strength is us" and with you, we are all Maureillas's strength. I can't as yet give you the final total but it will be around 6,900€, that's to say 1,100€ more than last year. Well done, everyone!
