If you have a favourite restaurant, know of a good day out or a forthcoming event outside the village, how about sharing it here Question Question
Where restaurants are suggested, it should be remembered that prices given may change, seasonal openning hours may differ and the cheapest menu is only served weekday lunch times. Sometimes in Spain/Catalunya Sud you might even have to ask for the "menu del dia/menu del diario" and you will need to read the bottom of the menu to see if bread and vat is included. "Bon appétit/Bon Profit!"

Out and About Empty Banyoles

Message par ruth Jeu 17 Avr 2008, 20:07

Banyoles
Getting there:
Take the road to Besalu/Olot from Figueres turning off left after Navata at the Petrocat service station where Banyoles is signposted. Return from Banyoles via Porqueres where there is a pretty romanesque church and Besalu, a small medieval town well worth a visit. From here it's back to Figueres and home.
A good day to go to Banyoles is a Wednesday when the market is on. Non-food items can be found in the old town on the (13th century) arcaded Plaça Major; fruit, veg and plants on the other side of the main road through the town. If shopping is not you thing, there are a couple of museums, a monastery and a church to visit and of course, there is the lake which was home to the 1992 Barcelona Olympic rowing events. Rowers still come here to train.
For the less energetic, there's a lakeside pathway, pleasure boat trips and a tourist train.
Eating and Drinking:
There are plenty of restaurants serving simple fare in the town and on the lakeside. For something more memorable (and expensive) there is the "Quatre Estacions" Passeig de la Farga, 5 (00 34 972 573300). Closed Sun eve and Mondays. The restaurant doesn't look very imressive from the outside but it serves a gastronomic menu with attention to detail. For something more interesting there is "Mas Casadevall" , Barri de Casals,13 (00 34 972 573313) where the three course menu which includes wine costs 9€! The menu is in Catalan so it will help if you have a dictionary with you! This small restaurant is housed in an old stone mas and provides a training opportuntity, along with some workshops, for people with autism. Just take the road to from Banyoles to Besalu and it's signposted after about three kms. Open Mon-Fri, 13h-15h. Great value, pleasant setting and tasty food.
This makes a good leisurely day out taking in wooded verdant countryside. Bon Voyage!

Out and About Empty St Laurent>>Maçanet>>

Message par ruth Sam 17 Mai 2008, 17:17

From wild countryside to four star comfort this is a day out with something for everyone. There are stunning views and good food on offer, time for a swim and a choice of routes home.
Directions
Head up the Vallespir valley on the D115 turning off to your left after Can Partère to St Laurent de Cerdans for a colourful visit to Les Toiles du Soleil. On from the village is a right turn for the Falgos Golf and Spa Hotel for at least a drink and views over the mountains and down to the Bay of Roses. When you can tear yourself away return to the D3 and continue through Coustouges and wind your way down into Catalunya Sud . Stop where you can for a photo opportunity of the village outlined behind you and stunning scenery everywhere else. Tapis comes next and is a lunch possibility but there is more choice and a less frenetic atmosphere in Maçanet de Cabrenys. Not only is the drive down to Maçanet spectacular, the village itself is well worth a visit with its narrow streets and abundance of eating places. The village website has an interactive plan of where the various monuments (some of which are in the mountains) are situated. Maçanet was also known for the production of high quality heather pipes.
Website: massanet.org ; Tourist Office: Aparcament del Pont (00 34 972 544297)
After lunch, head for the lake at Darnius for a swim or a stroll by following the signs to the Club Nautic on your right as you arrive in Darnius; here you can enjoy a swim, a walk in the shade or something to eat or drink at the bar where there is also a small children’s play area. Situated on the lake is a dam 63m high x 250m long. Returning home either by backtracking to the road to La Vajol, Agullana and La Jonquera or less scenically but quicker, by continuing on to the junction with the N11.

Eating and Drinking
(Please read the introduction to "Out and About" first)
§ El Corral de la Falgarona Sign posted on the left, opposite the war memorial as you go south from Coustouges. The piste takes you up to 1,100m giving good views. Food is simple though it is said to be better for a drink/icecream than a meal as there are preferable places to eat farther down the road. (04 68 395403) (00 34 972 193005)
§ Can Mach situated on the main road going south from Coustouges in the hamlet of Tapis, this restaurant is something of a local legend for cheap and cheerful food served in copious amounts. It is always busy and noisy with lots of different languages being spoken. In the evenings there are often theme nights. There are good views from outside and a shop underneath if you want to stock up on cheap alcohol. Closed Tues (Oct-June) (00 34 972 543311)
§ Bar La Pau situated on the main square with tables outside is the municipal café/bar. Always buzzing (00 34 972 544069)
§ La Quadra c/Rectoria,11; Serves more sophisticated, traditional food. Menu 18€, in summer and at weekends. Closed Tues, website: laquadra.com. (00 34 972 544032)
§ Can Tenli c/Domines, 11 Specialises in bacalau/salt cod dishes, closed Mon (00 34 972 544051)
§ Can Coll c/Tapis,1 Situated right by the side of the road which by-passes the old village and therefore lacks the charm of some of the others. Good value simple week day menu (00 34 972 544236)
§ Els Caçadors Urb els Senglars s/n Smart hotel /vaulted restaurant with good service and food. Prices are more upmarket too. Pleasant gardens. (00 34 972 554136)
§ El Réco de Turo c/Turo, 8 Simple restaurant with good value midday menu. Take you're Catalan phrase book with you. (00 34 972 535460)
§ Club Nautic overlooking the lake. Closed Wed, website (00 34 972 535356)

If you don't know St Llorenç de la Muga already, you should really put it on your list of "must visits". A medieval village with beautiful stone houses, small squares, old walls, and a shady river walk.

Sightseeing is hungry work so luckily there are also a number of restaurants in the village where a good value weekday menu can be had. Our favourite restaurant however, is on the outskirts of the village going towards Albanyà. L'Hostal de l'Aigua" is a modern building on your right but don't let this put you off. The food is excellent - more imaginative and sophisticated than the usual fare. Here, the weekday menu (public holidays and summer excluded) is 13€ as opposed to 8€ in the village but it includes bottled wine and is well presented. Un très bon rapport qualité/prix as the French would say.
The young owner is attentive, speaks English and is increasingly trying to source his ingredients locally from organic producers Smile . Closed Wednesdays.

Do give it a try, you won't be disappointed in either the village or the restaurant.

St Llorenç can be found by taking a right off the Figueres road through either Biure or Ponts de Molins. Smile Smile
